Vacations are something that we all look forward to and planning your trip should be part of the fun. With access to the internet it has opened up the world of travel to your living room. Who does not enjoy spending an evening surfing the internet looking for that perfect holiday? With the added stress at work and home these days it seems that our vacation time is more important then ever to us. So, let’s start the enjoyment side of travel with the planning process. If your holiday includes travel to Western Canada and the Canadian Rocky Mountains we have given you some great suggestions for online resources you should explore.
The Calgary Stampede is billed as the greatest outdoor show in the world. Calgary turns into the place to be from July 8 – 17th 2011. Calgary knows that the experience starts the minute you are in town, and the white hats (the good guys) are everywhere you look, starting with the “Western Welcome” from the cowboy hat wearing volunteers that meet and greet every flight that lands in Calgary during the Stampede. The events and entertainment are to vast to even begin to all of them, we recommend a must do of an afternoon rodeo performance and the evening show which starts out with the world famous Chuck Wagon races followed up by live stage show and ending with fireworks that extend way into the late night. There are concerts, horse shows, midways, art shows and much more. You can pre- purchase even tickets online at www.calgarystampede.com
After watching the world class cowboys and cowgirls competing you’re going to be inspired to try your hand at the cowboy life. A perfect way for city clickers to get a feeling for the ranch life while maintaining a perfect balance of vacation atmosphere, we all love to be catered to. Plan to visit Three Bars Ranch in Cranbrook BC. Your vacation at Three Bars Ranch will include your own private horse for the week, to ride every morning and every afternoon or your welcome join in on a raft trip, a guided hike or perhaps spend sometime fly fishing the St. Mary’s River. To check out Three Bars online visits www.threebarsranch.com
Last but certainly not least we suggest doing a circle tour, fly into Calgary spending some time at the Stampede, rent a car for the short drive to Banff National Park and on down the West side of the Rocky Mountains to Three Bars Ranch. To complete the circle you travel back to Calgary via highway 3 and the cowboy trail, which travels via some of the historic cattle ranches that make Alberta so special.

Here at Three Bars we are very proud of our wranglers and our past wranglers. A recent issue of Austalia’s Outback publication did a feature article with our very own Luke Cameron. You can check out the photos of luke at the Three Bars Ranch Facebook page. A cowboy hat is a cowboy hat and it looks just as great in the Australian Outback as it did in Canada.

Nicky & April
What you will fill your days with while visiting a dude ranch or a guest ranch will depend on the ranch you choose to visit. 20 years ago a ranch vacation typically consist or horseback riding and very little else. Today Dude Ranch’s offer very different unique programs from ranch to ranch. If you stick to ranches approved by the Dude Ranchers Association you are assured a strong horse back riding program, beyond that the programs will vary from ranch to ranch. Ranches typically include all activities in their programs, include such diverse activites as guided hiking, river rafting, fly fishing ,golf or spa facilities. Once again if you are traveling with kids or teens check to be sure that the activities are age appropriate or offered to the young people in your group.
When you choose a ranch holiday be sure to check what “additional” activities are available at the ranch and what is included in your ranch package. There are ranches that now offer non-riding rate sturctures for guests who are perhaps coming to the ranch to fish or hike, the ranches are in such wonderful settings with great facilities that you don’t have to be a horse back rider to enjoy a ranch vacation.
Remember there is a perfect Dude Ranch vacation out there for everyone you just need to ask the right questions to find the right fit for your Western Vacation. Happy Trails

Most people that decide to visit a ranch for their vacation are doing so because the want to ride horses. All ranches have riding programs, but they are not all alike. When choosing your ranch vacation you should ask the ranch specific questions about their program to determine if the ranch is a fit for you or your family. If you are a family with kids, first establish if the ranch has a riding program for your age kids. Does the ranch offer a chance for the family to ride together? Or, does the ranch offer a riding program that the kids always ride with kids only? For the adults in your group, does the ranch offer rides suitable for your riding ability? If lessons are important to anyone in your group, does the ranch offer lessons? Formal or on the trail? Will you be riding on the open prairie or in the mountains? How much riding is available to you as a guest? Do you get the same horse all week? For beginner riders having the same horse will help with your confidence level during the week. How large a group will our rides be? Most of the ranches have trail guides that you ride with, they are called wranglers and they are there for a few reasons, your safety, the horses safety, lead your group on the trails and they are a great source of information about the area and the horses. When you are choosing a ranch holidays there are not dumb questions, email or call your ranch’s and ask questions. Talking to the ranch office is the best way to get a feeling for the ranch and it will assist you in choosing the perfect ranch for your holiday.

How do you pick the perfect ranch for my vacation? Over the next 2 weeks i am going to discuss what to look for when picking the perfect ranch for your vacation. Unlike the traditional resort we have all come to know in the travel industry, ranches all have a personality and an experience unique to that ranch. I tell our clients that most dude ranches are a reflection of the family who own and operate that ranch. There is a ranch to match most peoples expectations, you just need to know how to find that ranch.
